Genetically Engineered Foods Are Safe!!! BOVINE GROWTH HORMONEDear Mr. Tesla: Thank you for contacting Green Giant concerning BST. BST (bovine somatotropin) is a hormone naturally found in cows. The synthetic version of this hormone (not to be confused with a steroid hormone) has been subjected to extensive testing. The Food & Drug Administration, American Medical Association, National Institutes of Health, the U.S. Department of Agriculture along with a number of other science-based organizations have concluded that there are no food safety issues in conjunction with milk produced by BST-supplemented cows. |
Genetically Engineered Foods Are Safe!!!
Challenge Butter
"BST is a protein hormone that occurs naturally in milk. It is also known as Bovine Growth Hormone. The FDA has stated that there is virtually no difference in milk from rBST treated and non-treated cows. At this time, it is not possible, using current scientific equipment/techniques, to differentiate analytically between naturally occurring BST and supplemental rBST in milk. To our knowledge, Challenge products are not produced from milk from cows that have been treated with the hormone rBST. In view of legal constraints, we have not overstated our assurance of rBST-free products since there is currently no test that can determine the truthfulness of dairy claims to be rBST-free."
Question....If Bovine Growth Hormone occurs naturally in cows, then why is it necessary to give it to them artifically?
A letter from a farmer: Another thing for you to think about is, if you check Monsanto's sales of rBST, they set an all-time high in sales for the 1st 5 months of 2007 then any 5 month period in the 13 years its been approved. You know what that means, even though farmers sign a letter they are not using it, they continue to use it because they know it does NOT change the composition of milk in any way and therefore they will never get caught. In conclusion I encourage YOU to drink your standard pasturized milk and enjoy the 15 vit. and minerals and numerous health benefits you will recieve from drinking this amazing natural beverage.
From: brandtfive@comcast.net To: Arthur TeslaSubject: Re: No Bovine Growth Hormone!! The consumer is OPPOSED to bovine growth hormone!! Date: Fri, 14 Dec 2007 Art You are again proving what an ignorant thing you are. Once again your spreading propaganda and lies. 1st fact lied about is, was the increase in mastitis. This increase was same as with anything that increases production per cow, wether its rBST, TMR, cow comfort, higher energy ration, etc. The farmer has to manage then for higher production and increased stress on the mammary gland. With increased technology on how to farm, I treat about 1/4 of the cows for mastitis that I did 15 years ago when there was no rBST. 2nd fact lied about in your e-mail was about rBST being banned all over the world, it is not BANNED IN these COUNTRIES. All products must be approved by a country's FDA or similiar department. Canada never pursued it because they operate on a qouta system. The European Union only voted against it on an animal welfare issue. With all their PETA type folks they were concerned with animal welfare issues. They NEVER expressed concerns over human issues like the uneducated in America are talking about. In fact, they buy our dairy products all the time from cows supplemented with rBST and have never asked for a label because they know it does not change the compositon of the product NOR does it adversly effect anything. Now who are the stupid ones. The percents thrown out here are unbelievable. If 5% of this was truth farmers would have quit using this product years ago. Farmers aren't stupid. The better they treat their cow and the healthier she is the more profit she returns to the farmer. I can take you to farm after farm that has used this product and show you the excellent condition of the cows. Farms where the product has been used for over a decade. In fact this product is used much more in the very cleanest and best managed farms then the ones that lack good management. I can then take you to organic farms where disease is rampant because they are not allowed to treat cows when they become ill. No matter how good you manage, just like in your house (and I am sure you have had to take an antibiotic at some time in your life), sooner or later a cow may become ill. If not treated she will spread e-coli mastitis, pneumonia, etc to her herdmates, causing death and milk or meat contamination. I am sure if you visited these farms you would never eat organic again. It would sure scare me to eat organic. Farmers like myself can treat a cow quickly upon illness for a fast recovery. We discard the milk and cannot ship it for processing until it tests free of antibiotics. Unlike rBST they can test for this down to an eyedrop in a tanker load and the processor tests every load ten times and if Im caught they dump it and I pay for the load. It is a shame how uneducated Americans, with their mouths and bellies full, can try to dictate how a honest, hardworking farmer farms when he is using safe proven products. When the world has people starving all over the place wackos are trying to make us farm like in the 1800s. According to the American Farm Bureau website, in 1940 one US farmer raised enough food to feed 19 people, in 2007 one US farmer feeds 144 people. Why? Because of safe proven technologies. Enough said!! Sincerely, Daniel Brandt PS Art, why don't you post this letter on your propaganda sites.

Frito-Lay
Frito-Lay uses contract farmers and tells them not to use genetically engineered crops. Some ingredients are purchased from the open market and corn might be purchased from outside sources to meet capacity. Genetically engineered foods may be in their products. No claim is made that the products do not contain Genetically Engineered Foods. They have a line of natural products.

Consumers can have confidence in their U.S. food supply because it is one of the safest in the world, thanks to highly sophisticated food science research and the work of regulatory agencies such as the Food and Drug Administration, the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency. Scientists who specialize in the study of biotechnology at leading universities and prestigious organizations, such as the National Academy of Sciences, continue to affirm the safety of this science for the nation's food supply and for reducing the need for pesticides, enhancing crop yields and providing nutritional benefits. |

Thank you for contacting us regarding Nestle USA and genetically modified foods. We welcome questions and comments from our consumers regarding our products.
Nestle USA uses ingredients derived from genetically-modified crops in some of our products. Over the last ten years, farmers have switched to new crops developed using biotechnology. These crops have allowed farmers to reduce significantly their use of pesticides and to conserve topsoil, which we feel are important benefits to everyone.
The FDA has carefully evaluated these new crops and has concluded that the foods made from them are the same as their un-modified counterparts with respect to nutrition, composition and their ability to be used as food ingredients. Additionally, the allergenic potential of these foods has not been affected. We have carefully reviewed the safety information on these crops and are in agreement with expert scientists at the FDA and university research centers.
Nestle USA products are manufactured under strict quality control conditions to meet or exceed all applicable government and industry standards. Because of Nestle USA's own high standards and the FDA regulations to which all of our products are subject, you can rest assured that all of our products are safe.

Genetically engineered foods:
Nestles believes in genetically engineered foods and uses these products based on "sound scientific research."
"Genetically modified crops, as all raw materials used by Nestle, comply to strict regulatory and safety evaluations. WHO, FAO, OECD and numerous independent scientific bodies have concluded that genetically modified crops, including ingredients derived from them, that have passed food safety evaluation procedures, can be registered as safe for use in food production. Nestle concurs with their shared opinion that such crops are as safe as their traditional counterparts. Nestles takes into consideration local needs, cultural differences and consumer preferences as well as attitudes concerning the use of ingredients derived from genetically modified crops. In some regions of the world, governments have expressed a keen interest in this technology as a potential tool to address their country's future food requirements. Provided their safety is proven, as required for all ingredients, Nestle will continue to use ingredients derived from genetically modified crops wherever appropriate."
Genetically Engineered Foods Are Safe!!!
THINK!!! If genetically engineered plants produce pesticide, then when the plant decays into the ground, the pesticide goes with it. You haven't saved the soil from pesticide. When the consumer eats vegetables from these plants, the vegetables have pesticide in it. What Bizarre thinking would conclude this is good?
Organic Farming would reduce pesticide use, reduce herbicide use and conserve topsoil!!! Why don't you try organic farming which would be popular with consumers!!

Many Fast Food Restaurants will tell you their French Fries are cooked in ALL VEGETABLE OIL. That probably means Genetically Engineered Soy Oil. NOT HEALTHY!!!! The next time you go to a fast food restaurant, ask them what kind of oil they cook their French Fries in. If they say 100% vegetable oil, ask them if it is genetically engineered soybean oil...pause for a moment and walk out. ![]() Maybe it will work on MONSANTO!! |

Hi Arthur,
Thanks for writing!
It is our policy that any of our products which may contain ingredients
created through the use of biotechnology, be proven that their safety
to consumers and the environment is fully established. Biotechnology has the potential to help meet the demands of people for everyday products that are more environmentally friendly; that involve less processing; that are more functional; that taste better; that last
longer; that provide added nutritional benefits; that are customized to
an individual's lifestyle; and that are currently available.
Biotechnology is important to Unilever (Lipton etc,) because it helps
our mission as one of the world's largest consumer goods companies to
continue to deliver innovative products that our consumers tell us they
want. Products resulting from biotechnology have been used successfully
and safely for many years - for example: in the pharmaceutical
industry.
We are also committed to the provision of the best possible information
to the consumer. The FDA has had a sound labeling system in place for
biotech foods since 1992. Under that system, biotech foods must be
labeled if they are found to be significantly different from their
conventional counterparts, or if they contain allergens. This is the
same basic program that safeguards the conventional food supply in the
United States. Since there is no difference between plants or foods derived from
biotechnology and those not derived, there is no clear reason to label
either respectively. All of our products are labeled in accordance
with the rules and regulations of the federal government.
It is our responsibility at Unilever - and a responsibility we take
very seriously - to make certain all of our ingredients are safe. We
believe biotechnology is already significant and that its development
will continue to bring major benefits to society as a whole.
Thank you for your interest.
Your friends at Unilever Bestfoods

A word from the U.S Department of Agriculture (excerpts)
We hope this information is helpful in explaining our Agency's role concerning the safety of plants developed through biotechnology. In this regard, we assure you that we remain committed to ensuring that our regulatory oversight is science-based and that we are keeping pace with the latest scientific developments in biotechnology. You may be pleased to learn that USDA announced in January 2004 that we plan to update our biotechnology regulations. To date, we have published in the Federal Register a notice of intent to prepare an environmental impact statement (EIS) in regard to the importation, interstate movement, and environmental release of certain genetically engineered organisms. The EIS will provide the first critical steps in a comprehensive update and further strengthening of our regulatory framework.
Thank you again for writing. Sincerely,
Cindy Smith Deputy Administrator Biotechnology Regulatory Services
Dear Mr. Tesla:
Thank you for your e-mail of April 13,2005, concerning the safety of genetically engineered (GE) crops. We recognize your concern and appreciate the opportunity to provide you with information about our Agency's efforts.
Dear Department of Agriculture:
It appears you don't recognize my concern!!!!!!!! Let me spell it out to you!!!!!!! I am OPPOSED TO GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS!!!!!! I don't want to eat Genetically Engineered Foods!!! I don't appreciate you allowing Monsanto to FORCE it upon us!!!!! My friends are OPPOSED TO GENETICALLY ENGINEERED FOODS!!!!! You don't seem to get it!!!! Even if you assure us it is safe, we don't trust your opinion and we don't want Geneticallly Engineered Foods!!!!! We want our foods as natural as possible! There should be mandatory labeling of Genetically Engineered Foods, so people have the option whether they want it. My friends and I believe you are working for big agri-business and not to protect the American people!!!!! People come first!!!!! Sincerely, Arthur Tesla
In order to safeguard our Nation's resources, the Federal Government has a comprehensive process in place for the regulation of biotechnology. Under a coordinated Federal framework, our Agency of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) works cooperatively with the Food and Drug Administration (PDA) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to ensure that the development, testing, and use of the products of biotechnology occur in a manner that is safe for plant and animal health, human health, and the environment. In this regard, our Agency enforces the Plant Protection Act, which authorizes us to regulate the importation, interstate movement, and field testing of GE organisms that may pose a risk to plant health.
Our Agency's Biotechnology Regulatory Services (BRS) program has developed two processes to regulate the introduction of GE organisms: notification and permitting. Notification, which is a process of expedited permitting, applies only when BRS has extensive experience regulating a GE organism and considers it to be a minimal environmental risk. All other organisms must go through the standard field permitting process, which imposes even more stringent requirements than the notification process.
In addition, if our Agency approves a new biotechnology-derived plant for field testing, BRS officials and their State counterparts may inspect the field test site before, during, and after a test to ensure that the site is conducted and managed safely.
In addition, if our Agency approves a new biotechnology-derived plant for field testing, BRS officials and their State counterparts may inspect the field test site before, during, and after a test to ensure that the site is conducted and managed safely.
All new plant varieties that receive field permits and notifications for testing may also be required to conform to the requirements of the two other Federal agencies with a primary role in regulating plant biotechnology, along with any applicable State agencies. PDA is responsible for ensuring that food products are safe and wholesome and that consumers are provided clear, informative, and objective information relevant to health, safety, and nutritional concerns. EPA ensures that any pesticidal substances, including those synthesized by genetically engineered plant varieties, are used safely in the environment. You may wish to contact these agencies for more information about their roles in regulating biotechnology. PDA's address is Consumer Inquiries Staff (HFE-88), PDA, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, Maryland 20857. The telephone number is (888) INFO-FDA (1-888-463-6332). EPA's address is Office of Communications, Education and Public Affairs, EPA, 401 M Street, SW., Washington, D.C. 20460. The telephone number is (202) 260-7963. You can find additional information and links to PDA and EPA on our Agency's Web site. The address is www.aphis.usda.gov/brs/ index.html.Specifically, BRS officials examine comprehensive scientific documentation prepared by the developers covering the biology and genetics of the plant, the nature and origin of the genetic material used, possible effects on other organisms in the environment and agricultural products, and all field test reports.
During the evaluation period, we also publish an announcement in the Federal Register that the petition and an environmental assessment are available for public review and comment. In our decisionmaking, we fully consider all such comments received within the specified time period. Our Agency grants the petition and issues a determination of nonregulated status only if, after we have reviewed all available scientific information, we determine that the plant poses no significant risk to other plants and the environment.
Since 1987, when the first field trial for genetically engineered plants under Agency regulations was approved, we have issued more than 10,000 authorizations for field trials and more than 60 determinations of nonregulated status for genetically engineered crops in the United States. None of the products that have been deregulated have been reported to significantly impact the environment in a negative way.
GENETICALLY ENGINEERED CROPS ARE DESTROYING ORGANIC FARMS!!!! EVEN A SUPER HERO COULDN'T PROTECT ORGANIC FARMS AT THIS POINT!

March 22, 2006 Dear Mr. Tesla: Thank you for contacting me concerning genetically-engineered food. I appreciate hearing from you. Advances in biotechnology and genetic engineering have given growers and researchers the ability to alter the genetic makeup of plants in ways not possible with traditional agricultural techniques. This has contributed to the development of crops with new and sometimes beneficial properties. The Food and Drug Administration is required to regulate genetically-engineered foods and food ingredients to the same extent as any other food products. This means that genetically-engineered crops must meet the same rigorous standards for quality and safety as other foods. In addition, under a policy adopted in 1992, the FDA requires the labeling of foods if they contain new genetic material likely to provoke an allergic reaction or if their nutritional content has been altered as a result of genetic engineering. In many cases, crops developed through genetic engineering are no different from crops developed through traditional selective breeding. At the same time, I understand your concern about the health effects and environmental implications of new genetically-altered foods. Please know that I am closely monitoring developments in this area, and I will certainly keep the issues you have raised in mind if the Senate considers any legislation to revise the regulation of genetically-engineered foods. Again, thank you for contacting me. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact my Washington, D.C. office at (202) 224-3841.
