***Unfortunately most people have no idea what is happening to our food, but the few who do will not purchase irradiated food for various health reasons - and we will educate others. The nice little green flower on the radura symbol is a joke, as deceitful as the claim that the irradiation of our food poses no danger to
consumers. Haven't the corporations messed up our food enough? The backlash
will not be pleasant for them and if they keep it up it will surely come.
***
Who put Dr. Frankenstein in charge of the food supply? People have a right to
pure, healthy food with all of its enzymes not something irradiated and dead.
Irradiating food makes food more dangerous, not safer. Some major concerns with
food irradiation include:
-The formation of free radicals, which can set off chain reactions in the body
that destroy antioxidants, tear apart cell membranes, and make the body more
susceptible to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver damage, muscular breakdown
and other serious problems.
-Serious health problems in laboratory testing, including, including premature
death, fatal internal bleeding, cancer, stillbirths and other reproductive
problems, mutations and other genetic damage, organ malfunctions, stunted growth
and vitamin deficiencies.
-The creating mutant forms of dangerous bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella
-Nutrient loss in foods, including the destruction of vitamins and essential
fatty acids.
-The formation of carcinogenic chemicals, like benzene and toluene.
Please stop this practice and at least make sure that irradiated food must be
labeled and institute labeling requirements for restaurants serving irradiated
produce or other items.Darden Brock
***The allowed irradiation of vegetables and meats subjects individuals to to unacceptable risks (particularly without labeling requirements). I am contacting my elected officials to inform them of this unwarranted use of radiation by corporate farms.
Another FDA blunder.
When will you people get it?
***Both my son and I have been treated for cancers, our quality of life permanently damaged. Our food supply is an abomination with regard to poisons and chemical impurities. Not only is the nutritional value of food reduced, but the food itself carries negative impact. Please clean up the factory mess and leave our food with it's natural nutritional value.
*** As an agency that is in the business of protecting my health, this is a request that you do not commence irradiating our green foods, specifically spinach and lettuce as you have plans to do.
Irradiation causes nutrients to be destroyed. Hence, the population can
be at risk for nutritional deficiencies due to the irradiation. What specifically
would they be at risk for? You have not advised us of this therefore, masses
of people would not even know what their risks are by eating irradiated spinach.
If you intend to carry out your plans to irradiate these greens then it is your
responsibility to inform the public of their risks in consuming produce that
is not fully a food because of its destroyed nutrients.
This is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY as you are in business to protect the public.
Thank you.
*** I highly disagree with the FDA's proposal to allow irradiation of spinach and lettuce. I am angry that the government of the wealthiest country in the world continues to treat RESULT(feces on mishandled agricultural products) rather than CAUSE (poor regulation/oversight of production). It might be more costly to regulate spinach and lettuce agriculture than to irradiate the products-- but sometimes we need to get a conscience and do the right thing, costly or not.
*** The food we have is so low in nutrients compared to years ago and now you wantto irradiate our lettuce and spinach hoping to destroy disease causing pathogens. Irradiating food makes food more dangerous, not safer. Some major concerns with food irradiation include:
-The formation of free radicals, which can set off chain reactions in the body that
destroy antioxidants, tear apart cell membranes, and make the body more
susceptible to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver damage, muscular breakdown
and other serious problems.
-Serious health problems in laboratory testing, including, premature death, fatal
internal bleeding, cancer, stillbirths and other reproductive problems, mutations
and other genetic damage, organ malfunctions, stunted growth and vitamin
deficiencies.
-The creating mutant forms of dangerous bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella
-Nutrient loss in foods, including the destruction of vitamins and essential fatty
acids.
-The formation of carcinogenic chemicals, like benzene and toluene.
I might as well not eat lettuce or spinach now.
***I think our country would be better served if you made big agri-businesses clean up their feedlots and what they feed their animals. It seems like every time there is an e-coli or salmonella outbreak it's because of contaminated water near a big agri-business farm. It seems to me you just want to put a band-aid on the problem(like irradiation) instead of actually fixing the problem.
***Our world is so unsafe and our foods so dangerous to eat that we do not need
radiation to make it more dangerous. Clean up our meat supply instead. Radiation
is dangerous. This is just another way to kill off our people or give more
people cancer and other diseases. I remember when i was growing up in the 40s
50s and 60s that i did not know one person who had cancer and most of the new
diseases. Once the FDA and the government started to control and let other
countries ship in dangerous vegetables and fruits is when things bad started
happening. Control imports instead. leave our home grown fruit and veggies
alone. I think if the growers are checked more often and the processing plants
checked all the time we would not have these outbreaks of food borne problems.
I for one am starting to grow more at home and will even pay for heating a green
house just so i can have a better quality of greens and such for my table as I
do not trust imports one bit.
***Deal with the problems inherent in a disease-ridden factory-farmed food system.
DO NOT allow the irradiation of lettuce and spinach. Food irradiation is the
controversial practice of bombarding food with high levels of x-rays (ionizing
radiation) in order to destroy disease causing pathogens. Unfortunately, in the
process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic chemicals.
Thank you
***The Bible says "Thou shall not put a stumbling block before the blind." Not letting consumers know they are eating irradiated food in restaurants, school lunches, hospitals and nursing homes etc. is doing just that. And it is a sin of the worst kind.
***Is shelf life extention more important then providing nutritious food to humans? Please look to other means of bacterial control and shelf life extention. Irradiating food is not the answer.
***I ask you to stop this irradiation approval and do it on your food only for a few years...if nothing happens then we will go along, but now stop this practice and do the will of the people that pays you every paycheck. Thanks
*** Dear Food & Drug Administration:
The citizens of the United States are already overfed and malnourished thanks to
large scale factory farming of produce & livestock. Irradiating lettuce and spinach
will decrease the amounts of nutrients in those products. These malnourished
individuals are steadily increasing the costs of healthcare in this country.
Those of us who "know better" are spending our hard earned dollars on organically
raised produce & animal products because we know they are more nutritious,
there are numerous studies to support this, and organic farms are better for the
environment.
During the debates on the adoption of the Constitution, its opponents repeatedly charged that the Constitution as drafted would open the way to tyranny by the central government. Fresh in their minds was the memory of the British violation of civil rights before and during the Revolution. They demanded a "bill of rights" that would spell out the immunities of individual citizens. This needs to be added...The right to clean food, grown naturally and free from irradiation, genetic engineering, chemicals, drugs and tampering

.***Irradiating food should not only be avoided, it should be banned! This is not a solution, it is putting a Band-Aid on the gaping wound that is the poor food safety practice in this country. There are necessary hygenic procedures that all factory-
farmed produce must go through in order to keep it safe and pathogen-free.
Permitting irradiation is like saying "it's okay, go right ahead and SKIP those very
necessary procedures." I do not want my food potentially contaminated with fecal
matter containing E. Coli even if the bacteria in that fecal matter has been
rendered sterile by irradiation. This approval will only lead to even more lax and
lazy follow-up of proper procedure. Correctly processed foodstuffs do NOT require
irradiation to make them safe for consumption. The FDA should be chasing down
those people who cause safety hazards in food due to lack of proper procedure
instead of making it easier for them to break the rules in the future.
Furthermore, if I buy something that should be fresh, I want it to actually BE
fresh. I do not want it to have been sitting in a refrigerated case for six weeks,
its "freshness" artificially maintained by its dose of irradiation. If I want something preserved, I'll buy it preserved. Irradiation is not preservation, it is false advertising! It is poor ethics and lazy procedure! BAN IT!
*** Please do NOT allow food to be radiated..it will kill and nutritional valve that may
be left,
***Please clean up the Feed lots instead of irradiating our food supply. This will zap the nutrition right out of the raw foods and etc. I don't believe a word of what the FDA says stating that it has nothing to do with the nutrition of the
food. Everyone knows that even a Microwave kills everything that's cooked in
it. Irradiating our food supply is just one more step to dictating what we have
to eat. Please help us keep it in its natural state. Thank you, Rosemary Miner
***Dear FDA Representative,
Please reverse your recent decision to permit the irradiation of lettuce and
spinach. The labeling system is not adequate--it does not include any provisions
for schools, for example. Further, the entire process, though expedient for some
major producers, is rife with future risks that have not and could not have been
examined because of both limits in our present understanding of irradiation and
its effects and the need for long-term studies.Thank you for your time,J Daigle
*** Please stop the irradiation of our food. Food is our major source of health and nutrition. I applaud the effort to bring to our tables non contaminated foods, but irradiation is NOT the answer. It strips nutrients from the foods and forms carcinogens on the foods. Please, please help to keep our basic source of
health healthy!!! With the rising costs of health care, let people have the
power in their grocery stores to eat nutrient-rich foods!
***Please do not allow the irradiation of food. While it's an inexpensive way to
destroy pathogens, it creates at least as many problems as it solves, including
destroying vitamins and creating free radicals and carcinogens. We need to find a
way feed people, make a profit, and keep a clear conscience.Thank you,Gwen Holt
***How is possible that an organization within DHHS, which promotes the consumption of fruits and vegetables to improve health and quality of life, would allow the irradiation of leafy greens when this process has been shown to reduce the
nutrient quality of foods. We are in an epidemic where 1 in 4 preschool children
are overweight or at risk, over 60% of adults are obese, cardiovascular disease
is the number one cause of death, and the list goes on. I don't understand why
irradiation is the solution when it doesn't reconcile the cause of the problem.
It is only logical to fix the cause and not present a pseudo-solution that has
negative side effects (e.g. generation of free radicals, reduction of nutrient
quality, formation of carcinogenic chemicals). I am not sure if you know but
according to the CDC, cancer kills 557,000 people each year and that doesn't
even count the number of survivors. Obviously, your fake-solution to this
problem does not fix the actual problem. And I wonder why this is the only
country in the world where this is a problem. We are not special; we just tend
to allow dirty industries such as animal factory farms to pollute our farm water
ways. This is the problem. Be accountable for your policies, and fix the real
problem of pathogen-infested farm water.
*** Do not authorize irridiation of spinach and lettuce. Start by requiring clean up of the feed lots. Animal bacteria comes from animals, not vegetables. If feed lots were required to clean up their waste and control the run off, vegetable growers would have an easier time producing clean spinach and lettuces. In any event irradiation is not the answer, it's typical of overkill and there are far superior solutions to the problem of contaminated food supply, especially where the public health is concerned. The FDA solution would make matters worse, not better.
*** I am against the irradiation of food as a way to counteract the poor farming practices that lead to Salmonella and E. Coli issues. Rather than bombard fresh produce with radiation, a practice with unknown effect, the farming practices should be addressed and corrected. Thank you.
***in the process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free
radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic chemicals.
While irradiated lettuce and spinach must be labeled in supermarkets, there are
currently no labeling requirements whatsoever for restaurants, schools, hospitals,
or nursing homes serving irradiated produce or other nuked foods such as beef.
Instead of cleaning up industrial feedlots you are killing the nutrients in our foods. This is STUPID and totally unacceptable.
***I agree with the OCA and others that mass marketing produce lots should be policed and strict adherence to the law of cleanliness enforced. With the irradiation of foodstuffs you are just piling one error on top of another. What will you do next? When this program takes a dive???? I have been told that beef has been irradiated for years so why are there e-coli outbreaks? In the past just plain common sense and cleanliness worked. It was successful. Why not return to it??? Marie Bucci
***Irradiated food is more than hazardous to our health; it's a crime.
Isn't it time we cleaned up feed lots, farms, and our food distribution systems
instead of blasting food with radiation? Irradiated food is damaged, lowered in
nutrients, and definitely not as nature intended.
Not everyone can access or afford organic food. The general public (in its
collective ignorance) is going to simply get sicker, buy more prescription drugs,
and die. Is this the plan?
How can the FDA be so blind to healthy food, healthy habits, and healthy eating?
Do corporate profits cause federal government blindness?
*** I am disgusted that you are even considering such a thing. Don't you as individuals care about what you eat and what you feed to your own children? Please don't make foods we view as healthy unhealthy. Does every household have to revert back to growing our own food because we can't place our trust in you to do the right thing?
I am very concerned about the nutrient loss in Irradiated foods, including the
destruction of vitamins and essential fatty acids. I also am very nervous because
even though, irradiated lettuce and spinach will be labeled in supermarkets, there
are no labeling requirements for restaurants serving irradiated produce or other
items. This will make it impossible for me and my family to make what we
consider to be healthy dining choices when eating out. Please do something
about this for households like mine who have put there trust in you to do the right
thing.
***I am opposed to your recent decision to allow irradiation of spinach and lettuces. Sanitary conditions at the source of our food chain would prevent such radical and unhealthy measures from being necessary. Require feedlots to clean up their act instead of destroying the healthful properties of our foods.
