Consumer Comments on Food Irradiation 15

****I am contacting you concerning the recent decision to allow irradiation of spinach and lettuce. I understand that the spinach and lettuce problems arise from runoff from feed lots, and single large factory farm production. I think this is where your efforts should be put, rather that doing some further assault on the nutritional content of the leafy greens. We are seeing record levels of many health/lifestyle chronic diseases, loss of soil fertility that adds vitamins, etc. to our food, and food additives that have questionable, or proven hazards to our health. Please think about contributing to our long-term well-being, maybe with a hard decision to a big industry rather than submitting to lobbying from companies who only have their eye on the bottom line.
***Cease irradiating our food and clean up agri-business.
***To whom it may concern. Consumers do not want irradiated food. In my opinion, there is not good data proving this practice is safe. Perhaps cleaning up farming practices would be a better solution to the pathogen problem. Thank you, Gretchen Brummel
*** I worked in a biology research lab in Princeton NJ in 1972 where I saw mice fail to thrive when their food was made with irradiated flour-there were small litters, miscarriage, cannibalism and lack of good fur etc.. The experiment was to check for genetic damage from irradiation for 3 years but had to start over twice because of not enough mice. I am suspicious of the value of radiation for food.
***Irradiation should not be used on produce - we should address the source of the problem, which is NOT spinach and lettuce, but CAFO's and factory farms that contaminate water supplies. Other reasons we should not irradiate food include: -The formation of free radicals, which can set off chain reactions in the body that destroy antioxidants, tear apart cell membranes, and make the body more susceptible to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver damage, muscular breakdown and other serious problems. -Serious health problems in laboratory testing, including, including premature death, fatal internal bleeding, cancer, stillbirths and other reproductive problems, mutations and other genetic damage, organ malfunctions, stunted growth and vitamin deficiencies. -The creating mutant forms of dangerous bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella -Nutrient loss in foods, including the destruction of vitamins and essential fatty acids. -The formation of carcinogenic chemicals, like benzene and toluene. -While irradiated lettuce and spinach must be labeled in supermarkets, there are currently no labeling requirements for restaurants serving irradiated produce or other items. Patrons and clients may consume irradiated lettuce and spinach in the future without their knowledge, nor consent. -There are many alternatives to irradiation. Visit OCA's Irradiation Alternatives page for more information.
***I ask that you clean-up industrial feedlots instead of irradiating our food.
*** Why are you again choosing to band-aid a situation than solve the root problems? As an agency of the government, you should be searching for and enforcing real solutions, solutions that have the public health in mind and an eye on long-term improvement.

Instead, you again approve a controversial, disagreeable practice in the name of public safety. You're only contributing to the enormous food crisis we already have underway. This is only one in a long series of decisions that makes me completely doubt and distrust the FDA's authority.
*** Irradiating food creates new hazards in the food and doesn't address the underlying problems that doused the food with microbes in the first place. Tell me: if you dropped your sandwich into a sewer, would irradiating it make it edible again? Would you eat it? The problem is the stream of animal waste isn't being managed and is spilling into the other parts of our food supply. That is the problem that needs to be addressed.
***Irradiation is not the answer to the spinach and lettuce problem. Organic Consumer's Association points out: "Unfortunately, in the process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic chemicals. While irradiated lettuce and spinach must be labeled in supermarkets, there are currently no labeling requirements whatsoever for restaurants, schools, hospitals, or nursing homes serving irradiated produce or other nuked foods such as beef." We do not yet know how tampering with our food supply will affect our health in the long run, but there is no need to re-invent nature nor alter it, when what we truly need to do is support local and small, organic farming, rather than cater to huge agribusiness practices that are poisoning our earth and therefore our foods. At the very least, our bodies, which are what they are after eons of evolutionary development, are not designed to digest and assimilate irradiated foods.
***Using Ionizing Radiation for the Control of Food-Borne Pathogens and Infectious Protozoa, may extend the shelf life of a product, but I believe it will reduce the shelf life of human beings. Do you bother to read reports about the negative effects of irradiation? You've already bastardized raw almonds with your regulations. Does anyone who works in your organization really care about human beings or do you only care about the industries that supply foods. Maybe those who work for the FDA eat Irradiated foods and have a hard time thinking clearly. Wake up, you are proposing actions that will harm far more people than you help. Sincerely, Don McKinnon
***Please put your efforts into cleaning up the nation's feedlots--which are extremely toxic and prone to mad cow disease, due to feeding practices. Taking the choice away from consumers who want fresh food---by irradiating it and calling it pasteurized--is subterfuge and wrong. One contaminated batch of food does not mean punish the whole lot---focus on the source and on education (washing the food BEFORE it is eaten!!). Sincerely, Pwyll Lalouken
***Please reconsider allowing irradiation of spinach and lettuce. even though they would have to be labeled in stores, they would not be labeled in restaurants, schools, hospitals, etc. Many people would end up eating them without their knowledge and consent. Please encourage clean and responsible growing methods and feedlot practices- to create a safer food supply in the first place-instead of resorting to questionable technologies to clean up afterwards. Thank you.
***Stop the practice of irradiation on the foods we eat. There are other safe alternatives.
*** Please do not allow irradiation of our foods without distinct label notation. the little green leaf symbol is a deception of this practice. if you grow good food it does not need irradiation.
*** I have concerns regarding irradiating lettuce and spinach. I believe cleaning up factory farms and their watersheds would be better for the environment and for human health. I am a registered dietitian and I will be advising my clients to avoid irradiated products.Thank you. Karen Leverett, MS, RD Forsyth, GA.
***Are you kidding me? Are you people going to eat this food?
*** HIGHLY DISTASTEFUL.....YOU PEOPLE DON'T SEEM TO ASK WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT ...IRRADIATION DOESN'T SEEM RIGHT FOR OUR FOOD SOURCES HAVE BETTER OVERSITE
***Please research how dangerous food irradiation is to food before this is passed!
***As a citizen and environmental educator and writer, I am responsible for educating thousands to environmental issues. I expect the FDA to do its job of insuring the safety of the food we eat without further jeopardizing further either its safety or its nutritional value. Irradiation does both of these. Clean up the industry!!!
***It seems that the potential risks far outweigh any benefits irradiation might provide. Please respond with a pro vs con format. What is the government's reasoning for allowing irradiation? Please consider the consequences of this process...increased health care costs, lawsuits, etc.
***I oppose using ionizing radiation on any food products. Restaurants should be required to notify patrons if they are using these products.
*** It is important to clean up the cause of pathogens, rather than to irradiate foods which may cause long term consequences. Resource are slim, admittedly, but public health is not to be compromised. Protect ourselves and our children, and children's children from this through increased oversight.
*** It is unethical to irradiate our food. Please stop.
***Please do not irradiate food such as lettuce and spinach. Find a way to solve the problem!
*** Please reverse this ruling that allows irradiation of any foods, most recently lettuce and spinach. I do not support irradiation, but clean farming methods. That's what you should work to change- not the quality and integrity of our food. No irradiation!!
***Please, for the love of God, do not radiate food. How can we allow this. This is not the solution. Please encourage farmers, packers, whoever is in charge and challenge them with a alternative way.
***I do not support the FDA's proposal to allow irradiation of spinach and iceberg lettuce. Proper handling by farmers, transporters, and consumers would mean that irradiation would be unnecessary. The FDA can require proper handling and fine those who do not comply. There is also a great deal of data showing that irradiation at the proposed levels does in fact reduce the nutritional content of food. Americans eat poorly enough as it is. They don't need extra help. Finally, if, in fact, this proposal goes through, then all irradiated spinach and lettuce must absolutely be labeled as such so that consumers, such as myself, can make a choice about what they are buying and also, if they choose to buy irradiated foods, decide to take more vitamins to replace the nutrients lost by irradiation and extended shelf life. Thank you. Sincerely, Linda Kurtz Michigan
***I ask you to turn disallow irradiation of food. As a physician, I have seen unforseen ill effects of supposed advances in health. There are alternatives to irradiation of food to reduce pathogen load. Please do not allow expansion of this unsafe and misguided practice. Joseph Stenger MD Oakham MA, USA

I wouldn't eat irradiated foods...TOO Dangerous!

***Irradiation is a very bad idea: those who promote it should think very hard about how it will affect the quality of nutrition for future generations. Is it really worth the money?
*** Please clean up the industrial feed lots - which is the real problem - instead of irradiating my lettuce and spinach. This process not only destroys valued vitamins and minerals, but also adds carcinogens to the food.
***Please do not allow irradiation of lettuce and spinach and other foods. It will harm countless unsuspecting individuals. Please work on cleaning up the root cause of the problem. Sincerely, Pam Carter br>***Irradiating produce is not the right way to go about keeping our food free of dangerous pathogens. Cleaning up commercial feedlots is the real answer to solving the problem. By treating the problem at its source, our food will not contain carcinogens, free radicals, and will have a higher nutritional value.
*** This is the wrong approach to irradiate food. This will be a danger to Americans eating the irradiated food. It will cause nutrition loss and possibly cancer. You are creating a long-term problem that can affect consumers eating the irradiated food. Stick to the problem of the poor processing of the companies providing the food. Regulate these companies. Please do not irradiate food.
***To Our Elected Officials: I respectfully request that you oppose the use of ionizing radiation on my precious baby greens and spinach of the Organic type. PLEASE, EXEMPT ORGANICALLY GROWN VEGETABLES FROM ANY PLAN THAT INCLUDES IRRADIATION OF FRESH PRODUCE. If a background investigation is done, you will find that all contamination of produce occurs as a result from poor management of feedlots in nearby areas. Produce from properly managed fields does not make people sick. Help us all live and prosper according to a natural order. Thank you for your time.
*** Hello, I ask that instead of permitting the irradiation of spinach and lettuce, which is a dangerous practice with undetermined risks to public health, you instead clean up feedlots and deal with the mess of the factory-farmed food system, which would have many positive effects in addition to solving the problems you are attempting to cover up through the use of radiation. Thank you. Dr. Carey Benom Kyushu University
***http://www.organicconsumers.org/irrad/alternatives.cfm)
*** Spinach and lettuce are staples of my family's diet. I do not agree with allowing irradiated food into the food chain. More research must be done to assure the safety of the food chain. Instead hire more inspectors and make sure the farms are safe! Please do not pass this regulation into law! Sharon D. Burillo Consumer
*** Why should anyone have to keep reminding you to take better care of yourself, your children and grandchildren and all humankind...think of it!
*** we don't need our food with chemicals please don't let these chemicals on our food no radiation on our lettuce and our spinach.stop this now ,before we Americans get sick....I will sign a petition to stop this now
***KEEP OUR FOOD NATURAL AND STOP IRRADIATION!!!!!! HELP FARMERS RAISE GOOD HEALTHY CROPS INSTEAD OF NUKING THEM!!!
***Stop taking short cuts with our health. We are bombarded with almost every environmental insult that can be invented and refuse to accept the sloppy management that this practice proposes. Isn't the growth of the cancer epidemic fast enough for corporate interests? Regulate the food industry properly to protect the quality of our nutrition. Dr. MaryAnn Sorensen Allacci
*** Solve the problem by looking at the source of the problem, not by making more complex problems- Don't strip our food ( yes, it is your food, too!) of essential health giving nutrients so that the big uglies - big pharma, big agra, big insurance, etc. - can satisfy greed at the expense of our lives!! Think of the people that you are entrusted to protect- STOP IRRADIATION!!
*** I wish to prevent corporate agribusiness and the nuclear industry from contaminating organic standards.
***To Whom It May Concern: I am appalled at the recent law requiring irradiation of spinach and other greens. First of all, this new regulation, which includes organic produce, will totally invalidate the purpose of organically grown food and remove whatever confidence that was provided by foods grown in this manner. Second, it is clear that this regulation supports agribusiness and their unwillingness/inability to properly process these foods. Instead of a more cost effect and healthier system of simply ensuring that these vegetables are properly washed, they opt for a more expensive and contaminating system of using ionizing radiation that has never been proven to be safe, while simultaneously compromising the nutrient status of the food. It also protects this industry from liability instead of holding them accountable for doing their job properly and providing clean produce. Ionizing radiation is not safe at any level and what the FDA appears to miss is the fact that lower levels of repeated exposure may produce effects that are years in the making. Cancer takes 10-15 years for tumors to occur and when they finally do, it is incredibly difficult to pinpoint the cause because it took so long to manifest. How do we know that low levels of exposure will not affect chromosomes over months, years and decades to create a variety of genetic mutations? How do know that the exposure of radiation to our food does not produce radiolytic bi-products that can create carcinogens or mutagens? How do we know? How many generations has this technology been studied and why is it that we always have to have death and disease before a government regulating body enacts laws to protect the consumer? How do we know if the presentation of radiation doesn’t mix with other environmental contaminants like pesticides and other household chemicals to create an unforeseen reaction in the body? How do we know? Instead of erring on the side of caution, we rush to punish the consumer instead of the companies that can't seem to get their act together. As an individual who has been dealing with autoimmune issues, I am very concerned that I will not be able to trust that the food I am eating is completely "clean". It is bad enough that most of food in circulation in this country is genetically modified, monkeying around with the human genome, now you have to compound the issue with irradiating our food without even giving the American consumer a choice. This started with the almonds in California and now this "easy way" disregard for the welfare of the American citizen is spreading like a cancer. This is appears to be another example of a government agency not looking out for the welfare of the American consumer and instead creates the image of an unhealthy financial influence by agribusiness over members of the FDA. Well, I choose to be responsible for cleaning my own vegetables. I choose to be able to continue to have access to quality, organically grown food. And I will continue to educate my students about this travesty because this is unethical and unfair. Gina Liberti, MS, DTR, MS ED Adjunct Professor of Functional Nutrition SUNY Rockland Community College
***Think people, THINK!
***I am absolutely, positively, 100% refusing to buy ANY food which has been radiated. It should be illegal to sell food altered without labeling it on the foods and the penalty should be extreme. It is our health at risk. That, of course, is the goal of the administration, right? Even if we have shorter shelf life, it improves the local economy and helps local farmers. The sooner we eat foods after the harvest, the better they are for us. Why should we radiate food, killing enzymes, making food a non-food with zero nutritional value?
*** Dear FDA: I strongly object to the irradiation of food. The health risks as a result are, over the long run, not worth the short term solution. We must clean up feedlots and look into the factory run farms methodologies to answer the problems of salmonella etc. Short term solutions are short sighted and don't take in the bigger picture. You need to get some more ideas for solutions so you have choices and hear the many voices. Its time to change your eagerness for quick solutions into a calm open-minded public discourse on the problems.
***Radiating our food just discourages companies from cleaning up the procedures they use in producing and distributing our fresh produce--- where real healthy differences could be made. It is a poor solution given that it alters the food in ways that make it less nutritious. Any food that is presently irradiated should have a label required. The consumer needs to know in order to protect freedom of choice. Thank you, Sheila Sheppard
***I find irradiation of lettuce and spinach to be adding to the problem of contamination and harmful modification of our foodstuffs. I do not plan to ingest these products. It seems that unhealthy processing methods encouraging growth of salmonella, E. coli, or other pathogen bacteria need to be addressed at the source. I also see a huge potential for creating mutant bacteria. Certainly, any food processed with irradiation, including beef, needs to be labeled.
*** Irradiation is NOT A SAFE alternative to enforcing safe farming practices industry wide. I do not want my food irradiated. Disease runs rampant now because of these chemically altering practices - including your refusal to label genetically modified foods. Stop avoiding your job and pandering to industry specialty interests. Your job is to "PROTECT" consumers - - - NOT POISON THEM. SAY NO TO IRRADIATION. I do not want to eat foods that have been exposed to dangerous and unproven methods that actually change the chemical composition of a healthy natural product.
STOP THE MADNESS.
If you ignore this, then you MUST label all foods that have been put through this dangerous and poisonous process. Let consumers decide if they want to eat unsafe food products.
***I appreciate your care for people's health, but irradiation will actually make humans sick due to the destruction of the enzyme molecular structure. In addition, the more we eat and live sterile lives, the less our immune system will be able to handle pathogens. In addition, it is not the government duty to control our natural food supply. I find the fact that in my own country I cannot buy raw butter, and in many places not even raw milk, very backward. Anyone can buy alcohol drinks that cause endless deaths, junk food, sugar and soft drinks that literally kill. Yet a healthy glass of real milk is not allowed and now you want to deem our vegetables useless. The fear of raw milk is based in lies. Check the real fact and you will see which milk kills and which heals. If you want to protect the health of American people forbid the sales of sugar, preservatives, soft drinks etc. This will save the lives of millions. Irradiating vegetables will lead to more disease and endless costs. Please do not irradiate anything and consider taking off the market the many foods and drinks that destroy our children's and adults' health. Sincerely, Naomi Aldort Ph.D.
***To whom it may concern, I am completely opposed to your plans for irradiation of spinach and spinach Irradiating food makes food more dangerous, not safer. Some major concerns with food irradiation include: -The formation of free radicals, which can set off chain reactions in the body that destroy antioxidants, tear apart cell membranes, and make the body more susceptible to cancer, diabetes, heart disease, liver damage, muscular breakdown and other serious problems. The basic problems are caused by the growth of huge corporate farming, whose only concern is profit. You folks need to become a branch of government defending the interests of the American people and not as a big business support entity which you have become. Sincerely, Rudy Zeller
***I'm sick of my family being a guinea pig!!
*** Dear US Government Regulations Department: regarding FDA-1999-F-2405, I am writing to comment on the Ionizing Radiation of our food that has already begun with lettuce and spinach. I do not believe in Irradiation of any food. I do not think it is safe. I think it takes away the full nutritional content of the food. I do not think it is right to manipulate the food supply. Why do you not insist on clean, sanitary conditions in every step of producing, processing and handling of our food? I look forward to your reply. Best regards, Candace Pearce
*** As a Nutrition Aide I want to tell my clients to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables. I do not support irradiation "ionizing radiation". To reduce the risk of pathogens I would strongly support changing the confinement factory-style animal husbandry practices that the United States currently endorses. Smaller pasture based real farms would help to counter the many downfalls of our current system. Lets focus on organic methods that support the small farmer, the animals, and consumer health. Sincerely, Sara Lyon Korbel, CA
***Do not allow radiation of lettuce and spinach
***Please do not further jeopardize the quality of our food supply by allowing irradiation of lettuce and spinach. The nutritional value of food keeps being degraded for the sake of larger and larger corporate farms and it is harder and harder to buy high quality food. The cost of poor nutrition is becoming painfully clear in this country with more obesity and chronic disease as the innate nutrition in simple fresh produce is degraded by irradiation, genetic engineering, and chemical treatments. Please stop this disturbing trend. Marshall Gavre
***Please clean up industrial agricultural practices instead of irradiating our food. NOW!
***I am very concerned that the FDA is approving food irradiation in order to destroy potential disease causing pathogens. It is far more important and necessary to deal with the problems inherent in a disease-ridden factory-farmed food system. And, there have been serious health problems in laboratory testing of irradiated food and nutrient loss, including the destruction of vitamins and essential fatty acids. If irradiation is going to be acceptable to the FDA, there should be mandatory labeling ANYTIME irradiated food is being sold or prepared. That includes restaurants or any institution or organization that prepares food for others. We want to know AND we have a Right to know what we are eating!
***I won't buy non-organic spinach because it has so many pesticides. I guess the overuse of pesticides does nothing to keep the pathogens under control. Don't make a bad food worse. Clean up the factory farms that spread disease.
***These propositions are outrageous. Our food is over-processed as it is. But to add a step - essentially a shortcut - that has the potential to cause CANCER??! That's outrageous. Simply outrageous. And we wonder why our disease rate is the highest in the world... we're doing this to ourselves. YOU are doing this to us. ENOUGH.
***Has this process been tested enough. It appears we are once again running off doing something that ruins our bodies. Is this the best way of ensuring our food stuffs are safe. What does it do the vitamins etc?
*** FDA please rethink your OK of Irradiated Lettuce and Spinach. Rather than dealing with the problems inherent in a disease-ridden factory-farmed food system, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced in mid-September it will allow the irradiation of lettuce and spinach. Food irradiation is the controversial practice of bombarding food with high levels of x-rays (ionizing radiation) in order to destroy disease causing pathogens. Unfortunately, in the process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic chemicals. While irradiated lettuce and spinach must be labeled in supermarkets, there are currently no labeling requirements whatsoever for restaurants, schools, hospitals, or nursing homes serving irradiated produce or other nuked foods such as beef. Over the past decade, OCA and our allies in the organic community have prevented corporate agribusiness and the nuclear industry from contaminating organic standards. Food irradiation is prohibited on any product labeled as "organic." Please do not irradiate any fresh foods that are grown organically for then they can not have the organic label.
*** I oppose the ionization of foods and feel the focus should instead be put on preventing the food-borne pathogens by cleaning up the sources of the pathogens.
***Please do NOT irradiate my food! Clean up the feedlots instead. Irradiation will cause a cascade of problems and takes us further away from real health.Thank you, Annette Kohn-Lau
***I am not pleased to read that the FDA is approving irradiation of Spinach/Lettuce.It's like giving the producers of these foods permission to improperly raise our food and ruin our environment. Radiation isn't the answer. Accountability for the way that growers produce these items is the answer. The time has come for the FDA to do its job and stand up for the citizens that employ them.
***I am writing as a health professional (family physician) who is especially concerned about public health and when government regulations can be used protect the public health. There are real health concerns about the consequences of using ionizing radiation on our food supply. Irradiating food makes food more dangerous not safer; in addition irradiating food lowers its nutrient value. There are many alternatives to irradiation. Thank you for your attention to these concern. Sally Goodwin, M.D.
***PLEASE STOP USING US AS GUINEA PIGS! LEAVE FOOD IN IT'S NATURAL STATE! STEP UP COMPOSTING AND OTHER SUSTAINABLE FARMING PRACTICES! NO MORE IRRADIATING!
*** This is an outrage! Stop destroying and adulterating our food supply. Illnesses are prevalent in no small degree because the quality of our food has been so compromised. Extension of shelf life is money motivated not health motivated as people require FRESH FOOD. Many food borne pathogens can be destroyed by WASHING or doing a mild hydrogen peroxide bath. Educate consumers instead of poisoning them with radiation.
*** Do not irradiate our spinach and lettuce.
***Do not contaminate our food anymore. Stop factory farming. Go back to the old ways. Please do not harm our children anymore. I see in huge difference in my children's health since we are primarily on an organic diet. We also only drink purified water to remove as many chemicals as possible. PLEASE, PLEASE STOP IRRADIATION AND FACTORY FARMING !!!!!!! Thank you, Kathy
*** Irradiation of food is definitely the least healthy and laziest option. Please reconsider
*** Please don't irradiate our food. Longer shelf life? I don't care how long it lasts, I'm not going to buy it, eat it or allow my family to eat it.
***I am absolutely opposed to the irradiation of any foods. Greens should not be irradiated for so many reasons... chiefly, because irradiation destroys the vital nutrients spinach and other greens would otherwise supply. Vitamins (like vitamin C, folate, roboflavin) and fragile fatty acids are destroyed and lost when exposed to radiation. Also, irradiation may create mutant forms of dangerous bacteria, like E. coli and Salmonella. Elderly, pregnant and very young individuals are already at higher risk of bacterial infection... irradiation would make it worse. It is irresponsible and a flagrant disregard for the health and safety of all consumers to put a band-aid on the problem of food contamination. Irradiation may kill some of the bacteria in foods but it also causes a host of other problems! The solid, responsible solution that supports the health of future generations is to regulate polluting industries and enormous farms, AND encourage smaller, sustainable family farms. All that aside, the public should be made completely aware, both in the grocery store AND in restaurants, what food has been irradiated. How can people vote with their forks if they don't know what they're stabbing them into??? Thanks for your time and concern about this matter.~Anne
***Please, use the FDA's time and resources to clean-up industrial feedlots instead of irradiating our food!!!
***This is to inform you that I am opposed to the use of Ionizing radiation on food. Food raised organically is less prone to problems and to increase shelf live simply decreases the nutrients contained. What do we eat for anyway? To avoid worms and eat the oldest stuff on the super market shelf? Sincerely, Jeanine Emmons, R.N.
***I do not believe irradiating food is best for the health of our population and especially not having a choice of whether you are eating irradiated food or not, such as in a restaurant or hospital.
***Look at our children... this generation is soooo sick. So many catastrophic changes have been made to the food they are eating and to the barrage of vaccines that they are given. Stop the madness. We parents and caregivers want to know what we are eating, injecting, and exposing our children too. The powers to be will probably make this change happen... BUT PLEASE LABEL the food. We want to know what is happening to our FOOD, so we can protect our precious children. I'm just one grieving father that probably doesn't matter... but as the truth about our food and drugs spreads... there will be more and more of us demanding full disclosure. Thank you for allowing me to weigh in on this important change to our food.
***DO NOT IRRIDATE OUR FOOD!!!!! Deal with the inherent problems in a disease-ridden factory-farmed food system. Food irradiation is the practice of bombarding food with high levels of x-rays (ionizing radiation) in order to destroy disease causing pathogens. Unfortunately, in the process of irradiation, other hazards arise, like the creation of toxic free radicals, vitamin and nutrient loss, and the formation of carcinogenic chemicals. we want real organic food! we want regulations to protect our health, not corporate interests!
*** Do not mandate irradiation!
***Dear FDA: I am writing to you in regards to your recent approval of the irradiation of spinach and lettuce. I feel it is essential to pay you give people the choice to know whether or not they are eating a radiated food of any kind. Therefore, I feel, not only to the labeling the made visible at a supermarket. But I should also be on restaurant menus as well. A radiation does not only killed pathogens, but also destroys essential nutrients and creates carcinogenic compounds. If you do not create the capacity for people to choose than you are not representing all the people, nor are you protecting all the people because individual needs vary. You know this, so be responsible in your policy making to all the people.
*** As an organization that promotes health and education for children with special needs, we wish to state that the negative evidence about radiated food counteracts any limited anti bacterial effect it might have, producing more health problems in children that already have compromised immune systems. Please do not carry this out.
***I am all for Irradiation of high risk food products. It will decrease the risk of illness, death and the waste of millions of pounds of food. It will prolong shelf life of certain produce.
***I do not approve or irradiating our food. please do not irradiate organic foods, which I buy!
***Stop the irradiating process for lettuce and spinach. There are better ways to deal with that! Thanks Ann
***Please consider not corrupting our food supply anymore than the damage you have done already. Keep in mind, it is your agencies that are responsible for aspartame sugar substitute being approved, a known carcinogen. If you Google "methyl alcohol poisoning and aspartame" you will come up with over 40,000 matches. Don't be afraid to read them, they are called scientific proof. Greg Burchett
*** I oppose irradiation of lettuce and spinach to fight pathogenic contamination of these foods. While irradiation does indeed kill pathogens contaminating these foods, it also may have unintended consequences, including diminishing the nutritional quality of the foods, the creation of harmful free radicals, and the production of carcinogenic compounds. Even more importantly, irradiation is an attempted quick fix of the larger problem of food safety within our current agricultural system. It is the system that needs fixing and irradiating our foods will not accomplish this goal.
*** please clean up the feedlots instead of irradiating spinach.
*** Please do not allow the irradiation of our food. Work to clean up food prep areas instead. Irradiation could have severe health consequences over time. Thank You, Jessica Smith
*** I am a consumer as well as a Certified Nurse Midwife working for the federal government for nearly 27 years. I am opposed to this regulation. We do not need more irradiated foods. Sadly, I have seen that The FDA has increasingly sided with the large corporations in matters of health and public safety. Thank you, Lorry Schneider, CNM
***Do not allow irradiation of produce for consumers. Instead, place higher regulatory standards on farmers to protect consumers.
***Irradiation of food is a bad idea if the food is not contaminated with bacteria. If the food is contaminated why not clean up the packaging and processing plants instead of putting an unhealthy band-aid on the finished product that consumers won't recognize the implications of?
***I think it is outrageous to even think of doing this to our crops. The government needs to keep our health first, but not so it destroys one problem and creates another.
*** Stop irradiating the food!
***Folks there a better way to cleanse foods. Ozonate, and clean up feed lots. Nuking food serves no purpose other than to make people sick. Do what is right..SaveGod.protect the people and do no wrong.
